In the November issue of Child Poverty Insights, Armando Barrientos, Professor and Research Director of the Brooks World Poverty Institute at University of Manchester, discusses some of the findings from his book: Just Give Money to the Poor: The Development Revolution from the Global South).
The main message from Professor Barriento’s book is that direct cash transfers to households in poverty are an essential component of poverty reduction and development strategies in the South. He provides an accessible account of the rapid growth of social protection programs and their impact on children, particularly girls. He also addresses issues of efficacy, the impact of transfer programs on child labour, and the feasibility of such programs in low-income countries.
